Vancouver, BC is the second-most westerly major city in North America (after San Francisco), and as such has a cool temperate marine climate (Cfb) with mild, wet winters and cool summers. The annual precipitation total for this area averages about inches but can vary greatly from year to year; rainfall is most prevalent during the winter months of November to April when around six days per month will see rain fall, and least frequent between June and August where rainfall totals are typically less than one day every two weeks on average. Temperatures below −20 °C occur on an average of once every five years whereas temperatures above 30 °C are seen on only nine days yearly. Precipitation mostly falls as snow in the coldest months while it rains more frequently over the warmer summer months although both types of precipitation commonly mix together throughout the year. In contrast, the surrounding areas experience humid continental climates (Dfb)and are subjected to extreme temperature variations. During February−March, temperatures over the nearby Fraser Canyon can drop well below −40 °C while at the same time Vancouver and its surroundings enjoy relatively mild weather with daytime high temperatures of near or above freezing. While the warmest period occurs between July and September, the highest daily temperatures usually do not surpass 25 °C even in mid-summer.
